Dan The Gardeners special on What Happens in spring
Dan the Gardener

Hello everybody it’s Dan the Gardener here.

It seems that spring has arrived a little early this year so here is a few interesting things I have noticed around Three Little Woods.

The word Spring means to jump into action and that’s just what animals and plants do in this season.
Spring is one of my favourite seasons in Three Little Woods. After the cold winter it is great to see some of the plants growing leaves again and some of my old animal friends who have been away in a hotter country or hibernating.

Not all animals hibernate in the winter some stick around like Georgie the Magpie to carry on annoying me all year round.

Georgie the Magpie says- A little bit of cold won’t keep me away Dan, Nan Fran makes her best cakes in the Winter everyone knows that!
Here is a picture of a baby duckling I saw paddling around the other day!

Animals hibernate in the winter because it is too cold outside. In the winter there is less food around. The berries have been and gone and some plants whose leaves provide food for creatures have lost there leaves until spring.

Here are a few mammals, reptiles and amphibians that hibernate in the winter and come out in the spring.

  • Grass Snakes

  • Common Lizards

  • Roman Snails

  • Butterflies
  • Moths

  • Ladybirds

  • Bats

  • Door mice

  • Slow Worms

  • Hedgehogs

  • Smooth Newts

  • Common Toads

  • Common Frogs

  • Smooth Snakes

Gigi The Butterfly says- Spring is brilliant me and my friends can fly the nest to enjoy the flowers and sunshine.

Animals hibernate by storing up food to store as energy.
Breathing slows down and the body temperature goes down.
This is so the animals can have a long rest when it is too cold to go outside

Here are some plants and animals you will see in spring  Picture here of some Daffodils in nan Frans garden

Animals - Lambs, Hedgehogs, Badger Cubs,
Flowers - Daffodils, Snowdrops, Daisies, Bluebells,
Amphibians - Frog spawn, Tadpoles,
Insects - Wasps, Bumblebees, Butterflies, Moths,
Birds - Swallows, Blue Tits, Ducklings
Trees - Alder, Ash, Beech, Oak, Chestnut, Sycamore

Did you know that Hedgehogs have around 5000 spikes on their backs so be careful if you see one.

This time of year is great for growing plants from seeds.
If you plant them now they can grow big and strong enough to go outside at the end of March.
By starting early you can have some vegetables and fruits by the end of the summer/early autumn.
Bye for now if you have any pictures of Spring please send them into me
