Jake and Jasmine are very happy today, as they go to school. Dan is going to visit Miss Pickles class and he is going to help them plant some trees. It is an event they all look forward to, because it gives them the opportunity to watch a tree grow for years to come, and to remind them about this special day. They will also learn about the different parts of a tree and how each part is adapted for survival.
Growing a tree is easy and fun. There are two ways to grow a tree:
Buy seeds (the quickest way) or collect them from your garden, unfortunately this way does take a long time
Or by a ready to plant tree called a sapling bought from a garden centre. A sapling is a lot easier to grow as it has already been started off for you and their roots will be well developed. They come in either a pot or a bag holding the roots and soil together.
Before you start you have to think carefully where you will plant your tree as some trees can grow up to 25 feet and possible more. So choosing the spot is very important.
Dig a hole just large enough for the tree to fit. Put the soil to one side as you will need this later.
Remove the sapling from its pot, or bag sack, and place it into the hole deep enough to cover the roots.
Remember the soil you dug out? Well place it around the roots covering them all and press down slightly, make sure it is nice and straight as well. You can add some bark chippings or taking care that it remains straight.
Next add some mulch as it help plant growth, mulches help keep in the soil moisture and the moderate of soil temperature. by retaining heat from the day and radiating it to the soil at night . Organic mulches may add nutrients to the soil as they breakdown as well.
Always water the tree thoroughly after planting.
You can always keep a diary of how your tree is progressing by measuring it and making notes, taking pictures and drawing it. Try to put down on paper how trees grow.
Parts of a Tree - they are made up of:
Root - the trees anchor, absorbing water and nutrients.
Trunk – supports the tree and carries water to the branches and leaves.
Branches – have the leaves growing out from them.
Twigs – small parts of the branches that tend to drop off.
Leaves - take in carbon dioxide and change it to oxygen for us to breathe and sometimes fruit, nuts and seeds. They also provide food and nourishments for the tree.
Bark – Which help to protect the tree. Plus helps many animals climb up it.
