Dan The Gardener - What to use as herb- garden pots and where to put them

What to use as herb- garden pots and where to put themJasmine

In Three Little Woods all the electricity is produced only by eco- friendly systems and everyone is very careful not to waste it, we also reuse all of our pots.

Recycle Michael will gladly tell you that to help the environment by recycling can be lots of fun. You just need to figure out a way how to make old stuff work in new situations. He calls that “Recycling with imagination”.

Here are a few Ideas for making plant pots.

  • Cut an old basketball ball that nobody uses anymore into two exact halves (get your parents or another adult to help you). When the ball is in two parts, get one of your parents to make four holes in the bottom of each half. You will need something to support our new pot, so before you fill it with soil, make a nice stone nest to put it in.
  • You could use drawers from old furniture as a plant tray if your parents have any of these that are prepared to go away for recycling.
  • Use old metal coffee, tea or biscuit tins. Just remember to choose large and deep ones.
  • Check around your toy boxes perhaps there you could find something inspiring like old sand-buckets or a horse and carriage toy that you could use the back part for plants. If you have old truck toys then they could carry some of the plants for your herb- gardening project!

Now Jake and Jasmine are almost ready to start the herb-gardening project. There is just one more decision to make.

jakeWhere to place the in-door herb - garden?

Jake and Jasmine thought about where would be a good place to put their indoor herb garden and they decided that the best person to ask about that is would be Miss Pickles.

Miss Pickles has a great taste in designing spaces and everything around her always looks so nice.

They found Miss Pickles in her favourite class room, working on her lesson for the next day. She welcomed them with a big, warm smile and listened to their question carefully: “Miss Pickles, where shall we place the indoor herb-garden?”

Here are a few Ideas from Miss Pickles.

  • When you are making an indoor herb garden, best place to put it is the kitchen window. Make sure you can safely reach the plants and that they are somewhere where there will be no cooking happening.
  • You could easily use a window in any other room in your home as long as it gets some sunlight.
  • You could also put it on the balcony.
  • Use cement blocks or empty pots turned upside down to create a tower upon which you can stack and stagger your various herb containers. (Ask an adult to help you).
  • Why not ask an adult to help you make a special shelf, where to put your herb- gardening project

Where ever you decide to put your herb pots it is best to put labels on each pot after planting the seeds in it. It will be so much easier to make the notes in your herb-diary.  While they are growing, you will notice, that your plants are not just very beautiful, but also very aromatic. All the way through your herb- gardening project your home is going to have a lovely aroma.
