Grass- Earths Carpet

Rusty The LawnmoverEvery day we walk around looking at
the
beautiful plants around us but we
forget about one of
the most important
plants on Earth - Grass!

Of course Rusty The Lawnmower loves Grass too but he is always moaning because he has to mow it, and he does not like hard work much.

Jennifer Pickles says

  • Did you know that Grass covers one quarter of the Earths land?
  • The word Grass comes from the Old English word graes which Jennifer Pickles
    means - to grow.
  • Grass can survive wherever there is a bit of rain. Grass has adapted to Rain Forests, Cold Mountain sides and Desserts.
  • The ancestors of Grass fed the Dinosaurs, this shows that Grass has existed for millions of years.
  • Did you know that Grass actually feeds more wildlife than any other plant?
  • Grass is a tough survivor that can survive frost and fire.
  • Grass grows from low stems underground.
  • This helps it when there is natural Forest fires because only the top blades get burnt and new leaves then grow from the undamaged low stems.
  • This is how it survives frost and fires and has managed to survive since the days of the Dinosaurs.
  • Natural Forest fires are nature’s way of controlling the Woodland, the fire kills the weak plants which makes room for new plants and trees to grow big and strong.
  • The ash which Forest fires produce is a very good fertilizer for plants and helps them grow quickly.
  • Did you know that Bamboo is a Grass?
  • Did you know that some Grass can grow so tall that Rhinoceros can hide behind it?
  • Did you know that a single piece of Grass is called a blade?
  • Did you know that Bamboo can grow up to 4 feet a day this is around 1.5 inches an hour?
