Energy (continued)

Our biggest problem is when we burn these fuels, gases are given off that cause pollution, this adds to the Greenhouse Effect making the earth a lot warmer The Greenhouse Effect is when fuels burned give off carbon dioxide. This absorbs the heat that the earth generates, and stops it escaping back into space. Instead, it acts like glass in a greenhouse, keeping the heat inside the earth. This in turn can change the weather.

So how can you save energy?

Have a look through and show your family you might all learn a thing or two

  • Turn off lights when they are not needed.
  • Put computers on standby when not being used.
  • Switch off Televisions, Stereo and DVD players as these use up 95% of electricity when on stand by.
  • A lot of heat is lost through the roof of the house, so lofts should be insulated to keep heat in.
  • Double-glazed windows also stop heat being lost, and noise coming in.
  • Walk or cycle, instead of ride on the bus or in the car; this can really help
  • save energy and make the air cleaner.
  • Dry washing outside, instead of using a tumble dryer.
  • Use energy saving light bulbs as these save 25% of the electricity and last 10 times longer.
  • Use rechargeable batteries as they can be used over and over again.
  • Do not forget to recycle and reuse as much as possible.
  • Only boil the right amount of water in the kettle and do not re-boil over and over again. Remember children should never touch kettles. This is for grown ups only.
