Birch Tree Family
Alder - Alder trees come from Chile and Europe, they can grow up to 32 metres tall. They grow flowers which produce seeds Dan the Gardener says Bumble Bees love the flowers from Alder trees Birch - Birch trees come from Asia, Europe and North America, they can grow up to 20 metres tall. The flowers are seed cones called Catkins.  Nan Fran says You can make a drink from the sap, bark, twigs and roots of the Birch tree.
Hazel Tree Family
Hazel - Hazel trees come from America, Europe and the Himalayas, they can grow up to 12 metres tall. The yellow flowers produce a Hazelnut Nan Fran says The oil from the tree can make Witch Hazel. I use Witch Hazel for bruises, swollen ankles and knees Elm Tree Family Elm - Elm trees come from lots of different countries like England and China, they can grow up to 40 metres tall. They grow a pod which contains seeds called a samara. Dan the Gardener says Elm trees can live up to 300 years! Holly Tree Family Holly - Holly trees come from Asia, America and Europe, they can grow up to 20 metres tall. They produce small red berries which are poisonous and grow big spiky green leaves. Jennifer Pickles says Did you know that the Mango is the national fruit of India and Pakistan? Dan the Gardener says The big stone in the middle of a mango is the seed. Nan Fran says Mango trees leaves are like poison ivy they make your skin itch if you touch them.
Beech Tree Family
Chestnut - Chestnut trees come from Asia, Europe and North America, they can grow up to 30 metres tall. The fruit is a Chestnut which has a spiky shell. Dan the Gardener says Chestnut leaves die in the winter Beech - Beech trees come from Asia, America and Europe, they can grow up to 25 metres tall. The flowers turn into nuts which drop the seeds. Oak - Oak trees come from Europe and the Mediterranean, they can grow up to 20 metres tall. Oak trees produce fruits called Acorns. Dan the Gardener says Oak trees can live for up to 60 years.
Walnut Tree Family Walnut - Walnut trees come from Canada, Europe and Argentina, they can grow up to 30 metres tall. Their fruit is the walnut. Laurel Tree Family Cinnamon - Cinnamon trees come from Sri Lanka, they can grow up to 12 metres tall. They have green flowers with a purple berry. Nan Fran says Cinnamon is one of my favourite spices it is made from the bark of the Cinnamon tree. Avocado - Avocado trees come from America and Mexico, they can grow up to 20 metres tall. The small green flowers turn into large pear shaped fruits. They only grow in hot countries and when they are big enough grow about 100 avocados on each tree. Dan the Gardener says Avocados are also called Alligator Pears because of their rough and spiky skin. Paradise Nut Tree Family Brazil nut - Brazil nut trees come from Brazil and the Amazon rainforest, they can grow up to 45 metres tall and up to 2 metres thick at the trunk. Brazil nut trees grow in dense rainforest so they have to be tall to get sunshine. Their leaves grow right near the top to get more sun light. They produce large coconut sized seeds which fall from the top of the tree.The shell of these seeds contains the Brazil nuts but can only be opened by a certain. rainforest rodent who eats some of the nuts and hides the rest. Jennifer Pickles says Did you know that Brazil nut trees can live for up to 500 years? Dan the Gardener says Some of the Brazil nuts that the rodent hides wait on the forest floor for water and sunlight then sprout and turn into new Brazil nut trees. Cashew Tree
Cashew - Cashew trees come from Brazil, they can grow up to 12 metres tall. The small red flowers produce Dan’s favourite snack the cashew nut. Dan the Gardener says As well as nuts the Cashew tree grows Cashew apples which can be made into jam. Mango - Mango trees come from India and the Philippine islands, they can grow up to 40 metres tall. The small white flowers produce massive mangoes. Mangoes are yellow and orange but red on the side that faces the sun.
Pistachio - Pistachio trees come from Afghanistan and Iran, they can grow up to 10 metres tall. The flowers turn into white Pistachio nuts.
Magnolia Tree Family Tulip - Tulip trees come from America, China and Vietnam, they can grow up to 35 metres tall. The flowers are green, yellow and red. Dan the Gardener says Tulip trees can live for up to 400 years Magnolia - Magnolia trees come from Asia, America and the West Indies, they can grow up to10 metres tall. The lovely smelling flowers are pink or red. Jennifer Pickles says Magnolias are the official flower for the American states Mississippi and Louisiana. Mallow Tree Family Balsa - Balsa trees come from Tropical parts of South America and Mexico, they can grow up to 30 metres tall very quickly.
Pine Tree Family Pine - Pine trees come from Asia, Africa, America and Europe, they can grow up to 20 metres tall. The leaves are evergreen needles. They produce pine cones in autumn. Spruce - Spruce trees come from Turkey, Norway and China, they can grow up to 30 metres tall. They produce spruce cones and have needle leaves. Dan the Gardener says Spruce trees are also known as Christmas trees. Douglas Fir - Douglas Fir trees com from North America, Asia and Mexico, they can grow up to 100 metres tall. They have needle leaves and produce Fir cones. Fir - Fir tress com from Asia, Canada and Mexico, they can grow up to 80 metres tall. The seeds are like helicopters and spin to the ground. Cedar - Cedar trees come from the Himalayas and the Mediterranean, they can grow up to 50 metres tall. They produce cedar cones in the autumn season. Dan the Gardener says Cedar trees produce a resin on the bark which stops squirrels and other animals from eating it. Cypress Tree Family Cypress - Cypress trees come from Africa, North America and the Himalayas, they can grow up to 30 metres tall. Cypress trees grow cones. Juniper- Juniper trees come from Africa and America, they can grow up to 35 metres tall. They have needle leaves and black. Giant Sequoia - Giant Sequoia trees come from California, they can grow up to 115 metres tall and 7 metres wide. They produce seed cones. Jennifer Pickles says Did you know that the Giant Sequoia tree is the tallest tree on Earth? Dan the Gardener says Giant Sequoia trees can grow up to 2000 years old but the oldest they found was 3,200 years old tree Bald Cypress - Bald Cypress trees come from Florida, they can grow up to 45 metres tall and 3 metres wide. They grow in the swampy water of the Florida Everglades. |
