Tree Families Continue
Bedstraw Tree Family
Coffee - Coffee trees come from Africa and Asia, they can grow up to 5 metres tall. The flowers are brown, the fruits are beans which are red or brown in colour. The beans are also the seeds and of course Coffee as well.  Jake says Coffee tastes horrible my mum drinks it, how does tea grow Dan? Dan the Gardener says Tea does not grow on trees it comes from a bush, Jennifer Pickles says Did you know that a big Coffee tree can keep on growing beans for up to 100 years? Rue Tree Family Citrus - Citrus trees come from Asia, they can grow up to 10 metres tall. The flowers are white and the fruits are large. Citrus fruits include Oranges, Lemons, Limes, Grapefruits and Tangerines. 
Gigi the Butterfly says Citrus fruit smells delicious and has a rind to peel before eating so Dan always peels mine for me.
Willow Tree Family Aspen - Aspen trees come from Europe and Asia, they can grow up to 25 metres tall. Aspen trees leaves turn bright yellow in autumn. Dan the Gardener says Aspen trees can live for 150 years that’s even older than Nan Fran! Poplar - Poplar trees come from Spain and Morocco in Africa, they can grow up to 30 metres tall. Dan the Gardener says Poplar trees grow new plants from their roots. These roots spread out far and can start new trees up to 20 metres away from the trunk. Willow - Willow trees come from Europe and Asia, they can grow up to 20 metres tall. The flowers are called catkins and contain seeds. Dan the Gardener says
There are lots of different Willows one only grows to 6 centimetres tall but very wide. Nan Fran says Back in my day we used the bark of the Willow tree for head aches and fevers. Soapberry Tree Family Maple - Maple trees come from Asia, America and Europe, they can grow up to 20 metres tall The flowers are small and red. The leaves turn lots of different colours in autumn. The seeds are like helicopters which spin to the ground. Nan Fran says We use the sap of the Maple tree to make Maple syrup. The Maple leaf is on the national flag of Canada. Horse Chestnut - Horse Chestnut trees com from Asia, America and Europe, they can grow up to 25 metres tall. The pink flowers produce black or brown chestnuts. The Horse Chestnut trees seeds are called Conkers. Jake says My friends and I love to play with Conkers. We soak them in vinegar over night then make a hole through the middle. When there is a hole you put the string through and tie a knot so it won’t come out. Now you have conkers ready for a game. Lychee - Lychee trees come from China and Vietnam, they can grow up to 20 metres tall. The flowers green to white and small, they produce a red fruit called a Lychee which has a seed inside. Palm Tree Family Coconut - Coconut palms come from New Zealand and Asia, they can grow up to 30 metres tall. The flowers are red, yellow or pink with very large heavy fruits. Georgie the Magpie says I have some monkey friends in Thailand who help collect coconuts Dan will not let me help because he caught me eating his strawberries Date - Date palms come from Africa and Asia, they can grow up to 15 metres tall. The white flowers turn into brown or orange dates. |
