September 2009: Dan The Gardener Newsletter
Dan The Gardener On the Site

Welcome to Dan The Gardeners September Newsletter.

Hello it is that time of year again, back to school for another season. The fruits and vegetables are out in Three Little Woods and the allotments are going great. Just to let you know that October is a busy month with some great things happening. We are telling you now because it gives you time to spread the word and tell your family, friends and teachers.

The 4th of October is World Animal Day, this is a great chance to get your school to participate and start its own project to help out, maybe you could make a poster or a game to help others learn about our wildlife friends.

The 10th of October is once again the International Plant a Tree day an opportunity to join thousands of others in planting trees. Last year 73700 trees were planted! If you or your school would like some help on how to get involved with either of these projects just contact us through the website.

Recycling what is in your lunchbox!
Look through your School lunch box and find out what you can recycle, reuse or compost from it.

  • Tin foil from sandwiches or rolls
  • Some Juice cartons
  • Plastic bottles from drinks
  • Yogurt pots
  • Paper and Card packaging
  • Wrappers from chocolate or cereal bars
  • Fruit peels like banana and orange can be composted.
  • Did you know that if you cut banana peels into thin strips and then into small bits you can place them on the top of a plants soil. Banana peels rot very quickly so the plants can use them as a fertilizer
  • Try collecting the seeds from apples and oranges to plant them.
  • Check the packaging for a recycling logo to make sure it can be reused
  • Your parents may say it is not clean to bring back apple cores and banana peels so why not ask your teacher if your school can get a compost heap?
